Wi-fi 7
If you’ve seen “Wi-Fi 7” popping up on new routers lately, you might be wondering — do I really need that? Wi-Fi 7 is the latest generation of wireless technology, and it’s all about speed and reliability. Think faster downloads (Up to 46Gb/s), smoother streaming, and no lag when everyone in your house is online at once. It also handles crowded networks more effectively, allowing your smart lights, TV, laptop, and phone to stay connected without competing for bandwidth.
But here’s the catch — most people won’t notice a huge difference right now. To actually use Wi-Fi 7 speeds, both your router and your devices need to support it. Some older devices may not even be capable of using the new technology as compatible hardware is required. And unless you’re running a super-connected smart home or constantly transferring massive files, Wi-Fi 6 (or even 6E) will still feel plenty fast. With the new technology and speeds, there is another drawback, and that’s range. The 6Ghz band that WiFi 7 operates on does not penetrate walls or obstructions without significant interference.
So, should you upgrade? If your current Wi-Fi is running fine, hold off for now. Prices will drop, devices will catch up, and by then, Wi-Fi 7 will be worth every penny. But if you’re setting up a new home network and want something that’ll last you the next five years — go ahead and future-proof it. Your next phone or laptop will thank you.
